Discussion:
Truecrypt on Windows 8

I need to be able to read and write to Truecrypt archives on Windows 8. Is
there any option for this? Truecrypt is announcing they are discontinuing
support for Windows because of Bitlocker, but that is a pretty crazy thing
to do. TrueCrypt is more portable across older releases of Windows and has
added security features.

They are not discontinuing TrueCrypt because of BitLocker. That they
would even recommend BitLocker as an alternative is seen as evidence
their site became a warrant canary.

Forget what you see on Truecrypt's old home page. They might've been
served with a national security letter (NSL) with a court order of
secrecy (i.e., they can't say they received the letter or that they are
complying with the letter). Perhaps they refused to alter their product
to allow an NSA backdoor so they made a crippled version to obey but
made their site a warrant canary alert of the gov't interference.
Perhaps they got scared of the upcoming 2nd audit on their product
looking for backdoors would find some, so they ran away. There has been
no communication from the authors which may also be conditions mandated
in the NSL.

They produced a crippled version, dumped it at Sourceforge, and then
they disappeared. They have always been elusive: the authors were never
identified and they never responded to any inquiries.

I'm sure you can find the last *full* version of Truecrypt somewhere to
download. Some other folks started up a new site to host Truecrypt
(https://truecrypt.ch/) where the US gov't cannot issue national
security letters and secret court orders or otherwise interfere with the
product. They grabbed the open source for Truecrypt to continue its
distribution. I suspect the won't product a fork until the 2nd audit
completes and finds no security leaks, vulnerabilities, or back doors.

What is the last full version that is not likely crippled?

And, does anyone know if that version will install correctly on Windows 8?

7.1a

That's the same version downloadable from the new TrueCrypt site. The
crippling in 7.2 was to make TrueCrypt read-only; that is, that last
version compiled by the elusive authors will only open existing
TrueCrypt containers. It cannot be used to create TC containers or do
whole-disk encryption.
And, does anyone know if that version will install correctly on Windows 8?
I don't see a reason why it wouldn't install and work correctly. It
runs just fine under my instance of Windows 7 Home Premium. Plus, if
you visited the new TrueCrypt site, you would have seen Win8 was listed
as a supported platform.

If you don't want the latest version, there is a link at the new site to
let you download the older versions. I don't know why you would want an
older version but they are there if you want them.

Don't know, don't use Windows 8. It works for me
on Windows 7 so it should be OK on 8.

Second that !

Stick to version 7.1a, nothing later, and you'll be OK.
